A bit of fun history...

...the peace symbol...

A Sign of the Times , by Jena Peterson (an article taken from "LDS Living - online magazine)

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the peace symbol—one of the most recognized symbols in the world.

Designed for the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War by Gerald Holtom in 1958, this forked symbol was used as part of the British nuclear disarmament movement. It is a literal combination of semaphoric signals (visual signals with hand-held flags, often used at sea) for the letters N and D, which stands for "Nuclear Disarmament."

The symbol’s first appearance was made among thousands of British anti-nuclear campaigners who set off on a 50-mile march from London's Trafalgar Square to the weapons factory at Aldermaston. By the 1960s it had become synonymous with the anti-war movement, and today appears on buttons, flags, clothing, jewelry, key chains, and just about anything else you can think of.

But the popularity, and its association with the anti-war movement, meant the little design was destined to be attacked as well. It spent some years mocked as a “crow’s foot” or the “footprint of the American Chicken,” suggesting that peace activists were cowards. But for the most part the positive peace sentiments prevailed, carrying the symbol to its unprecedented familiarity even 50 years after its birth.

The drawing was never copyrighted. Gerald Holtom and the anti-nuclear campaign refused to put a price on a symbol and a meaning they said should be free to everyone.

Today the design is an international symbol for peace, and though wars continue and the bomb never was banned, the world’s shot at peace is branded by the most popular uncopyrighted image ever invented.

crackle, rummble, BOOM!!! - Daylight =) ** update

** amazingly, the aircons still work when they are leaking. Because there are no right angles in the house and so many BIG windows, there is something underneath each aircon (they are wall units set up high). Sometimes it's a TV that is under an aircon, so I must check them all the time to see if anything is potentially getting ruined ;) What causes them to leak, is that after a particularly heavy and long rainfall (or several days of them), the air outside is extra saturated with moisture and the aircons can't keep up with the de-humidifiying of the inside air. That's when I call the Aircon guy and he comes and vacuums out the aircon - and it's good until it's too full, again - which could be months! Ya just never know!

It's 4:22 AM and I was woken up by another GREAT thunderstorm. And then lulled back to sleep by soothing sound of the rain. And that's really nice, because yesterday I was so aggravated by my livingroom aircon!! It must have leaked enough water to have created this lovely thunderstorm =) I called the aircon guy in the morning; they said, "he will be there between 5-7 PM" - (augh!) and he didn't even show up until 8 PM - I had emptied 3 trashcans of water and did a good mop job as well on the floor - TWICE - before he showed up to vacuum-drain the aircon to give it room to do it's job of evaporating the heavy humidity in the air -- I think I created the rain storm =) the water from my aircon and the thunder & lightening from my frustration and now more peaceful sleep from the shushing of the rain =) ahh, nighty night........ZZZZZzzzzzzz

CERTIFICATE =) ** update

** there will be a new challenge that starts on June 1st. If anyone is interested, I think the website will continue to be hinckleychallenge.com They haven't said what the challenge will be -- the BOM or something else...so stay tuned =)

"This certificate certifies that Laurie Ogden has successfully completed THE HINCKLEY CHALLENGE and on 7 May 2008 became a warrior!" This is what the certificate says. I finished reading the Book of Mormon today, in 94-1/2 days, 2-1/2 days early, after having been as much as 70 pages behind! If you look at the graph below, it looks like I'm just starting to read - and I am =) - for the 2nd time! yahooooooooooo. I hope the graph works after 10th May - that's when it's scheduled to be the end of the challenge, which was "read the BOM in 97 days". If it's not available, I'm gonna keep reading anyway and keep my own chart! Read On!! =)
